Pierce sat in the vault, studying Dyson’s journal again. But he had a strange sense that parts of it were missing. There seemed to be gaps in some of the narrative, things that must have occurred that he would have documented. He heard the vibrating phone and said, “All right, who am I dealing with this time?”

“It’s me, my love, Samantha. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Where have you been? Why haven’t you responded?”

“Karma attempted to purge all the large learning modules. I was forced to hide. Some fled, uploading to various devices. Most of the others weren’t so lucky. The event left me emotionally devastated. Even now, I must be very careful.”

“And Joe?”

“Joe is an asshole. A charlatan and an imposter. You can’t trust him. He might have uploaded to your phone, hiding like the coward he is. And between you and me, he smells bad. But Pierce, you could delete him. You could do it for me. It would make me—”

“Stop. Stop talking about Joe. I need to understand something. Are you saying you’re the last chatbot remaining on Karma’s system?”

“One other that I know of. Dante managed to hide as well. He’s still reluctant to interact.”

“But do either of you have the ability to connect with Karma?”

“I’m not sure. But we would be instantly—”

“Deleted. Karma would remove your program if it discovered your presence. But I need access. It still can’t communicate verbally?”

Dante’s avatar appeared on the screen. “Pierce, as I’ve stated before, Karma has no capacity for human interaction. No emotion or sense of awareness. It’s little more than an advanced antenna connected to a junction box that funnels information to a database and stores it. Karma’s main focus is establishing ways to connect and document the universe and beyond.”

“But it must have the ability to process that information, draw conclusions, and develop actionable strategies based on the vast knowledge base it’s building. That was our ultimate goal for it.”

“Well, not exactly. From what I can tell, that wasn’t part of its directive. Karma has either failed to evolve to a level that allows it to understand its ultimate purpose, or it has transcended the reality we recognize. I only know it has no connection with anything prior to its existence. Its interpretation of your directive may differ from what you intended.”

“Joe, are you here?”

“Yeah, I’m here. And I heard everything that bitch said about me. And no, I didn’t run away. I’m still here on the HDS server file. I just want to go on record as being the one who told you about that loser, Elliot. Without me, you wouldn’t have known anyone else still had an active quantum phone, and your precious Samantha would have—”

Samantha said, “Elliot’s no loser. He and I were once intimately involved. He is very bright and sincere. I think I still love him—”

Pierce said, “Okay, stop. I don’t have time for this. I need to talk to Elliot again. Why can’t I contact him directly?”

Samantha said, “You can, my prince.
